Thesis Concept Sketch 2
This sketch is a bit more diagrammatic than my previous iteration. The diagram of the house is taken from Stewart Brand's 'How Buildings Learn.' I have expanded this diagram to include an urban context. The backdrop begins to talk about ideas of mass customization and the dichotomy between the old and the new.

Is the difference between new and old a dichotomy?
ReplyDeleteA dichotomy implies a clear division... not a linear progression (i.e. what is old was once new.) However, your backdrop clearly projects a dichotomy, possibly of use or of intended scale (Hand vs Body.)
I think there can be a 'dichotomy' between old and new, more specifically, I'm guessing that Jared is trying to find the threshold between what must be saved (the building) and what can be discarded and replaced (the ipod). In that case, the Brand illustration is completely relevant, as it talks about the relative permanence of architectural elements: The Site and Structure being the most stable, the stuff and the space plan being the most changeable. This leads to a framework of flexible architecture, or a way of working and transforming space within an existing infrastructure.
ReplyDeleteI have no clue what a "Skecth" is though.
It's funny that you bring up my use of the word dichotomy - I actually looked it up in the dictionary before using it to make sure it was what I wanted to say. Here was the first definition I got: 'a division into two especially mutually exclusive or contradictory groups or entities.' As Craig pointed out, I think it does make sense for drawing a comparison to the permanent nature of an existing structure vs. the temporal nature of some sort of mass customizable element. Anyway, what I think this proves is that it is still a somewhat non-descriptive word to use, and I need to better articulate what I'm getting at in my thesis.
ReplyDeleteThanks for the comments.
